The Calcium Weight-Loss Connection

Posted by Jone Share This

Health authorities have always said that drinking milk will build strong bones and teeth. Why?  Because milk is a good source of calcium and it is the calcium that our bones and teeth need to be strong and healthy.  But there is another benefit of including more calcium in your diet. The latest claim is that calcium also helps you to lose weight

Recently studies have been showing that taking calcium rich foods such as low-fat yogurt, milk and cheese can speed up the fat burning process.  This is good news to those who eat and drink dairy products.  However, if you are lactose intolerant then you need to get your calcium from other sources.  Foods such as spinach and fish are also rich in calcium.  Another way to include calcium in your diet is by taking calcium supplements.  Getting more calcium will not only help you to burn fat , but it will also keep your bones strong and prevent osteoporosis.

Calcium rich food sources:

-Asparagus
-Blackstrap Molasses, Brewer’s Yeast, Broccoli, Buttermilk
-Carob, Cheese, Collard Greens, Cabbage
-Dandelion Leaves, Dulse
-Figs
-Green Leafy vegetables (Mustard &Turnip Greens, Spinach,)
-Kale, Kelp
-Milk (Cows and Goat’s Milk)
-Nuts (Almonds and Filberts)
-Oats
-Prunes
-Salmon , Sardines, Seafood, Sesame Seeds, Soybeans
-Tofu
-Watercress, Whey
-Yogurt

Herbs and Calcium

Adding herbs to your diet will not only make eating more delicious but also it will increase your calcium intake and lower your weight as well.   Listed below are some herbal sources to include in your diet.

Herbal Sources of calcium:

-Alfalfa
-Burdock Root
-Dandelion
-Cayenne, Chamomile, Chicory
-Flaxseed, Fennel Seeds
-Hops
-Lemongrass
-Nettle
-Paprika, Peppermint, Plantain
-Raspberry Leaves, Red Clover, Rose Hips

It’s easy to include herbs as a calcium source. For example, when you make salads or sandwiches for lunch just add some dandelion leaves and alfalfa sprouts and you’ll be adding calcium to your daily diet.  When you want to add some spice to your chicken or fish add some paprika or chicory.  Use a little flaxseed oil in your salad dressings when you want to enjoy a slightly nutty flavor. I often add ground flaxseeds in my morning cereal or yogurt as well. Use fennel seeds when cooking fish and enjoy the mild taste of anise.

Drink Herbal Teas

Drinking herbal teas is a great way to get more calcium too. Herbs such as chamomile, dandelion, nettle, raspberry, clover and rose hips are available in teas.  Herbal teas come in a variety of flavors and have a wide range of medicinal benefits.  Green tea has long been known to help in the effort to loss weight.  Chamomile tea is good for calming and getting a restful sleep.

As you can see there are many ways to include calcium rich sources in your diet. When you add calcium to your diet it will help you to maintain your ideal weight or even lose weight.  Eating more of the above foods and drinking herbal teas will help your bones and teeth stay healthy providing you with more of the best diet for life ingredients.
